A background in industrial design allows Dirk to appreciate and draw inspiration from what we design and build in our living environment. His paintings feature what is familiar to all; trains, buildings, bridges, and old vehicles.
These objects are in various stages of their own life cycle, each having their own history, their own story to tell before they disappear.
Through the interaction of forms --the way light falls on a surface and the spaces in between, the play of colours, and the movement of line-- his images can evoke an emotional response from each of us. In his paintings, the ordinary and commonplace becomes beautiful and mysterious.
Dirk grew up in Ottawa and now lives in Smiths Falls.
